I think that I speak for the majority of women when I say, “We hate cellulite!” But 80% of us have it. Are we supposed to just sit back and love our cottage cheese thighs, bellies and butts? I, for one, am not willing to do that. If you’re like me, you want to know if there is any hope.

The number-one cause of cellulite is gender – that would be all of us beautiful females. It has to do with our production of estrogen, and it doesn’t matter what size you are; if you are female, you can still get cellulite even if you’re thin. Cellulite is caused by fat deposits just below the skin’s surface. It typically begins after puberty and can make us feel less attractive or embarrassed. As we know, cellulite tends to target the upper thighs, stomach, buttocks and even the upper arms. Cellulite gives the skin that dimpled, unattractive, orange-peel appearance.

Both men and women get cellulite, but because of our hormones, we women are more often affected by it. It may be caused by a poor diet high in salt and carbs and insubstantial amounts of fiber. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and fiber can help to lessen the effects of cellulite. As we age, our skin begins to thin, making cellulite more apparent. And because collagen is less firm and we’re losing estrogen, we also begin to lose the taut skin we had when we were younger. It’s important to exercise to maintain muscle tone and increase circulation – both of which lessen the effects of cellulite. It’s common sense: The more muscle tone I have in my thighs, stomach and butt, the less room there is for cellulite. I can see a huge difference when I stop working out and go on one of my exercise sabbaticals.
